Information in a nutshell

The Modrý Kameň castle is situated on a cliff at the foot of the Calvary hill, where the Krupina plateau starts. Verbal tradition says that it got its name from the colour of the construction stone or the cliff, where it was built. It is a precious landmark area – ruins of the upper castle, connected to the manor house in the castle yard on the rocky cliff. The baroque manor house of the 18th century, which forms a part of the castle, houses the Museum of marionette cultures and toys at the Modrý Kameň castle. It is a specialised museum with nation-wide scope, aimed at documentation of the history and present activities in puppetry, history and development of toys for children, as well as the history of the region where the museum is situated. Cultural, artistic, historical, archaeological and ethnological collection the museum maintains and protects in a professional manner have been made available to the public in the form of standing exhibits, exhibitions and various cultural activities that are popular among children and young people.

Project description

The aim of the project is to restore the cultural heritage - the northern wing of the Baroque mansion, in order to provide visitors with currently unused space and offer activities and services in the historic interior for the local community. The north wing of the manor will get its original look and new creative, relaxing, and representative premises. The artistic creation of the puppet theater and the handicraft production of the Kyjatic wooden toy will aim to educate young puppeteers and carvers, to present their important role and the production process to visitors of all ages, especially for children and young people. The project also includes the opening of the "Castanea" patisserie. It offers traditional regional confectionery made from chestnuts from the castle and town chestnut trees. It will also serve as a cultural space with social facilities for various purposes and activities, such as discussions, concerts, meetings, lectures, exhibition openings, the sale of works of art, and a public reading of books.
